STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. We’re focusing on these areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively. STEM is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with hands-on, problem-based learning. For the latest research on integrated STEM education, see the National Research Council report STEM Integration in K-12 Education.
According to the U.S. department of Education, jobs in this decade for some STEM related fields are projected to increase as high as 62% compared to a projected 14% growth for all other occupations. Even though 28% of students choose to study STEM during their high-school education, more than 50% of them give up on their decision by graduation.
In 2006 the United States National Academies expressed their concern about the declining state of STEM education in the United States. Its Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy developed a list of 10 actions. Their top three recommendations were to Increase America’s talent pool by,
- Improving K–12 science and mathematics education
- Strengthen the skills of teachers through additional training in science, mathematics and technology
- Enlarge the pipeline of students prepared to enter college and graduate with STEM degrees
At Athena Learning, we’re addressing the needs of students who desire to further their education in STEM related fields.
Our Math curriculum blends conceptual understanding, problem solving and foundational skills. Our catch-up Math curriculum focuses on repairing the misconceptions of critical concepts and building routines, rituals, and data driven progress monitoring. For students who demonstrate above-grade level abilities, our award-winning enrichment math curriculum will challenge your child and keep them ahead.
Let’s take the frustration out of reading! Our Reading curriculum is a research-based program that gives students the specialized skills necessary for comprehending complex informational text. Our Reading curriculum teaches students how to navigate complex informational text and develops their content knowledge. The program consists of five Foundation Levels with 30 lessons in each and a corresponding Word Study module with 15 lessons each. Athena also has a special program developed for earlier readers in grades 1-6 for students not yet ready to place into our core reading program. If you child is in high school, we offer an online, interactive reading curriculum that our older students rave about!
Writing is essential for college bound students. Our Writer’s Enrichment Workshops offer constructive peer support and review, video, audio, reading and discussion while improving writing skills. Students are asked to back up what they are writing with specific examples from complex texts. Our Writer’s Enrichment Workshops also prepare students for state tests, where writing skills are continually emphasized. Certified teachers work with students individually or in small peer groups.
Our Science curriculum focuses on scientific investigation, process skills, reading comprehension of complex text, and ways for teachers to probe for student understanding.
State Exam Test Prep
With our test prep tutoring programs, our certified teachers help kids learn strategies and study techniques to approach annual state testing with confidence while minimizing stress and improving results.
SAT/ACT Exam Prep
Athena’s SAT/ACT Program is the new standard in exam preparation with curriculum by The Princeton Review®. We have experienced SAT/ACT teachers that focus on test-skill building and test-taking strategies. Instructor led, small study groups or one to one sessions are available. Some Athena locations also offer direct programming with the Princeton Review®.*
Our study skills programs will provide your child the organizational and attention–focus abilities to approach homework with greater efficiency and perform better in the classroom and on tests. These executive functioning skills that we build up through exercises also include note-taking strategies.
We know that ever-increasing amounts of homework can be stressful on the family, especially for two-worker families. Our certified teachers work with your child to make sure their homework assignments are being done completely and that any subject-matter not understood can be dealt with immediately.
Prepare your child before the school year starts! Our summer tutoring programs are a great way to help your child avoid summer learning loss and start the new school year with confidence. Summer is also a great time to catch up to grade level. We have fun and targeted learning programs during our summer sessions covering our core program offerings in reading and writing, math, and study skills.
